LASU Students Kick Against Newly Introduced CBT Fee

By Sakiriyau Lukman
Students of the Lagos State University, are kicking against the new development of the 10,000 naira fee introduced as CBT fee by the school management on the 6th of July, 2024.

This new fee was introduced after the university announced the commencement of the second semester course registration exercise, which made students log in to register their courses, only to find a new #10,000 fee tagged “CBT fee”, particularly for the 100 and 200 level students. Other new fees introduced were “Forensic fee “of #1,000 and “Counselling fee” of #5,000.

The student populace of the institution are vehemently saying no to the introduction of the new fee as  it was done without prior and proper notice.

A Student from the department of Finance who asked to be anonymous spoke to ACJLASU. She said; "These fees are unnecessary. I am here wondering why they would just mandate students to pay fees without explanation of any sorts. We are just waking up to see we have to pay one fee or the other. It is just not fair to us"

Another Student from the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies expressed her disappointment to this reporter. She said; "I am just so disappointed. The economy is so bad and every one is struggling to survive. They are not even trying to reason with us first, they just went ahead to introduce new fees. If this is not extortion, I do not know what else to call it."

Another anonymous student said; "I just feel the school is not being considerate for adding a fee to our portal without a prior notice despite  the situation of the nation's economy. Last semester I paid only 70 percent of my school fee hoping to pay the 30 percent this semester. The new fee will only disrupt my budget and it might affect my academics because I am now thinking of two payments — the new CBT fee and the balance of my school fee.

Other students have taken to X and other social media outlets to express their displeasure and protest against the new fees, while trending the hashtag #SAYNOTOCBTFEE,# SAYNOTOEXTORTION.
The Lagos State University Students' Union reacting to the development in a statement, have advised the students to not pay the fee yet, as " the new fee was introduced without notification or consultation with the students body."
