The Faculty of Communication Muslim Student Association (FACOMSA) symposium, held on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, recognized the outstanding achievements of six first-class students from the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.
The symposium, themed "The Resurgence," took place at the university mosque hall and comprised three sessions: a career talk, a post-university talk, and an academic excellence award ceremony.
Guest speakers included faculty lecturers Dr. Saheed Adeyemo, Dr. Tunde Akanni, and Dr. Ganiu Okunnu. In the second segment of the program, six first-class Muslim students from the Faculty received awards for their academic excellence, along with cash prizes. The students honored were Mohammed Fathia Abike, Ajayi Samiat Oluwatimilehin, Dauda Mistura Opeyemi, Olusesi Azeez Damilola, Sanusi Ashiah Motunrola, and Sikiru Sumayyah Omotoyosi.
Oladimeji Yusuf, the Faculty Coordinator of the association, explained the addition of the "Rewarding Academic Excellence" segment to the symposium, saying, "We were trying to provide a different avenue to meet our members and thought of new programs to add. When we thought of how to reward students with high GPAs, we added this segment alongside the Career Counseling and Post University Talk sessions, which is the second of its kind."
During the symposium, Dr. Saheed Adeyemo discussed "Media Resurgence: The Deen Agenda" and emphasized the importance of using technology to propagate Islamic messages. He encouraged the congregation to share Islamic content, stating that "the more you share the message, the more the light of Islam will shine, and darkness will not vanish if the light remains hidden."
Dr. Tunde Akanni spoke on "Communication for Resurgence" and highlighted the significance of being mindful of what we say and share, especially in this age of advanced technology. He linked this to the increased rate of suicide and the impact of technology on human interactions, remarking, "The same way it's much easier to go astray because of technology, it is also easy to create relationships."
Also, Dr. Ganiu Okunnu advised students to be selective in choosing their friends, likening it to placing a fresh apple next to a rotten one, which can lead to contamination.
The event also saw the presence of alumnis from the association like Mr. Abdul Azeez Balogun, who had previously served as the faculty coordinator, Shukroh Bankole, and Eletu Suliat.
