The Independent Electoral Committee (IEC), Independent Petition Committee (IPC), and the Independent Audit Committee (IAC) conducted an orientation session for the Lagos State University Students' Union Aspirant on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
The session which took place at the Conference Hall 2, Student Arcade was aimed at briefing the aspirants regarding campaign and election guidelines as well as the roles of each electoral body. The Chairman of the Independent Petition Committee, Olamilekan Bamise, outlined the role of the committee as the body handling post-election complaints and irregularities. He further stated the need for the session to brief them on how to file a petition for any election misconduct.
He explained the process of petitioning and election and assured aspirants that in-depth guidelines would be released for them for better understanding. He concluded by assuring the Aspirants that every petition would be addressed with utmost fairness under his administration. He also noted that the petition fee which was earlier N10,000 has been reduced to N2,000 to enable all aspirants to have the opportunity for a fair hearing.
The Independent Audit Committee (IAC) Chairman, Isiaq Umar Oladele explained its roles of auditing the financial dealings of aspirants and office holders at LASUSU. He encouraged all aspirants to settle any financial irregularities as defaulters would not be handled with mercy. He advised the aspirants to be real with themselves, spend wisely, and manage their finances appropriately when they eventually emerge.
Furthermore, the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Committee, Salami Mubarak Oriyomi, cautioned the aspirants against campaign violence and irregularities such as removing opponents' posters. He buttressed that aspirants should not hesitate to report any IEC members who pose a threat to their participation. He further enlightened them on the electoral guidelines and motivated them to stay relevant whether or not they won their elections. “You win or not, your name has become something that can never be erased in the history of Lagos State University. I commend you all for having the courage and boldness to represent your people and be the voice of the voiceless. However, keep it in mind that whether or not you emerge, ensure to always stay relevant," he concluded.
The Information Officer of the IEC, Sara Agboola, assures the aspirants that the 35th Independent Electoral Committee promises a free and fair election. She noted that the body will ensure all participants are equally represented regardless of their position. The IEC also reiterated its availability to attend to further inquiries and clarifications.
