The annual coconut breaking festival took place at the Faculty of Arts on June 3, 2024, near the LASU Badagry gate, commencing promptly at 9 a.m. The festival, a notable event in Badagry, was used to celebrate the upcoming convocation at LASU.
The event began with the dignitaries, including the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibilola Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, deputy vice chancellors, deans of faculties, heads of departments, alumni, ibile members, press representatives, staff union representatives, student union representatives, and attendees, standing to recite the national anthem. Following this, Prof. Olatunji-Bello delivered her keynote speech.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello expressed gratitude to God and warmly welcomed everyone to the 27th coconut breaking festival at LASU. She highlighted the significance of the event, noting that it provides an opportunity to offer prayers for the welfare of Lagos State University, its staff, students, and stakeholders. Additionally, she emphasized that the festival showcases the rich cultural heritage unique to LASU and Lagos State, promoting unity, peace, and development within the university.
In her speech, she detailed the origins and importance of the coconut breaking tradition to the school. She urged alumni and stakeholders to continue their unwavering support and provision of essential amenities to help LASU achieve its goal of becoming the leading institution in West Africa. She concluded her address by wishing everyone a successful coconut breaking festival and 27th convocation ceremony.
The event concluded with prayers and the ceremonial breaking of coconuts by the vice chancellor, deputy vice chancellors, deans of faculties, heads of departments, alumni, ibile members, and student union representatives.
