It is needless to start expressing what the atmosphere is like currently on campus, one can easily figure what a preelection season feels like, but unlike the conventional system, where political parties go about campaigning, the university politics allows for independent candidacy hence, all aspirants do their publicity themselves.
The case is not different in LASU currently as the university students Union government is at the verge of transition, and election would come up in few days, after the independent electoral committee was constituted by the legislative arm of the exiting administration weeks ago.
The independent electoral committee chairman Waheed Oluwaseun Nurudeen, in an interview with ACJ correspondent stated it clearly that the electoral body would not succumb to any form of influence from external bodies in response to the questions about the last election which ended inconclusive.
The big question now is, what is the fate of the aspirants? You may want to say that their fate will be determined by the election, most definitely it will be, yet, it is of great importance that we all get familiar with the electioneering process and how it has been done in the past.
Going down memory lane, the Sekoni Tayo led administration that was brought in during the 2015/2016 session was succeeded by Kappo Olawale Samuel's through a computer based voting system that was conducted then. The process had never been the problem, neither had the aspirants been, yet majority of the students populace laments at every result the election yields.
Going forward, the transition from the Samuel Olalere (Samgrin) administration saw the flashpoint of the whole process. The outcry from students about the inconclusive election that was carried out then to produce the exiting Oladele Olutayo (Oladelz) still echoes.
This event further gave a sort of say, to the popular rumour amongst students about the possibility of a "V.C candidate" amongst the aspirants. The trio of Nafiu Hamid (Book Halal), Nurudeen Yusuf (Omo mewa) and Wusa Isidor ( synergy) all presidential aspirants challenged the election process at the post election tribunal.
The petition gave a verdict that never stood till date, which was that a presidential election be rerun.
Memories of the last election that featured the whole drama is still as fresh as all participants of the event are still very much on campus to witness this coming election.
A lot of questions waiting to be answered by God knows who.How independent is the electoral committee?, won't the past event create a sort of aparthy in this coming election?,does the student's vote really count?
The best answer I'll proffer to this is to advice all student to turn out on election day to vote a candidate of their choice into office. Weather we like it or not, this university politics is directly proportional to a dummy of the real politics at the national level and if there is a better place to learn how it works, it is here on campus.
