Dusk set on the tenure of the 29th Lagos State University Student Union (LASUSU) administration, it was seen off with applauds as it paved way for the dawn of a new era.
The 30th LASUSU administration (Executive and Legislature) led by Comrade Ashade Abdulbasit (OBS) and
The RT. HON. Aromire Abdulquyum respectively was sworn in on Monday 13th of January, 2020 in the presence of students, the school management led by Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun SAN PhD and well wishers after series of campaign strategies.
Recall that former President Comr. Oladele Oluwatayo Olawale (OlaDelz) transferred the baton of leadership to the new administration which has Ajayi Obisesan Tofunmi (Toflex) as the Vice President, Kuku Eromidayo Isaiah (Kuku Jnr) as General Secretary, Okunnu Adekunle Rasheed as Assistant General Secretary, Adams Olawunmi Zainab (Yettydlaw) as Public Relations Officer, Gbadamosi Oluwabunmi Solomon (Solomania) as Social Director, Ganiyu Akinwunmi Azeez (Hayzed) as Welfare Director, Ajitokewu Babajide Abdullateef (Babajide Aji) as Sport Director, Orimayomilegbe Idris Yomade (Yomighty) as Treasurer and Oyebolarin Olayinka Moses (Happiness) as Financial Secretary.
The newly elected executives have proven their worth in different capacities in the University which affirmed the students' trust in them and subsequently led to their individual victories.
Comr. Ashade Abdulbasit was the former President of the National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS - LASU), Kuku Isaiah functioned as the General Secretary of the National Union of Education Students Association, (NUESA - LASU) while Gbadamosi Solomon served as the former Social Director of NUESA and Okunnu Odewale was the Assistant General Secretary of the Social Science Students' Union (SOSSA).
A final Student of Faculty of Education bears his mind on if LASU has the right set of people to change the status quo said "The face of the institution over years has a new dawn which has actually brought about diplomatic approach to dealings and of which graduates and students are now forces to be reckoned with. Yes, I must say that Lagos State University (LASU) has the right set of people to change the status quo of the University both in sports, entertainment, scholarship, competitions, and finally in academics".
Sanni Omolaja Shakiru, a penultimate year student of Mass Communication, believes the new administration is capable of performing very well because its members have held substantive positions across the university. He urged the new administration to work effectively with the University management to maintain a steady calender, come up with new ways of solving problems and also initiating a project which he termed "Spot Hazard".
Spot Hazard according to him is a project where places that can cause harm to students are identified and the attention of the management would be called to it. He is hopeful that they would do better than the previous administration because they must have learnt from the mistakes made by their predecessors.
Alli Wasiu Olusegun, a member of the LASU Debate Society threw weight behind the administration, saying if they have the right and adequate resources, not overwhelmed by their status and greed they would be better than their predecessors.
Alli when asked what to expect from the new administration said "Well, we should expect half of all they have promised during their campaign".
Speaking on how feasible it is to have an independent LASUSU, he said "We should not expect such now.
The time of radical student comrades is in the past already. Dialogue and cowardice has already been embraced and I can categorically say it has come to stay except of course the leadership of the institution itself changes"
Another student believes that since they were elected based on popular mandate they would protect the interests of the student populace at all cost. He asserted that the students should expect nothing but the best from them.
The stage is set and the new administration has become the cynosure of all eyes. It is a matter of time before we start seeing the stuff they are made of. They can either live up to expectations and shun Naysayers or give critics a reason to smile.
The students of LASU have chosen their representatives, let's just hope they made the right choice.
Also reacting, is the Honorable speaker Abdul Qoyum Aromire
"To a very reasonable extent I would say the interest of the students should always come first because without the students there will be know leadership because who are we leading what is leadership? It is being the frontier when it comes to students activities and putting the interest of the students first.
So, I will just urge the students because we want to want to entrench the welfarism of students at large because looking at it the president that emerged gave manifesto on the day of inauguration on realistic agenda he wants to give out to students on commercialization, that is on movement of students to and fro provision of easy access to transportation and the likes so from the ends of the Parliament we know our dealings is basically legislation and we would make sure laws are properly interpreted and implemented because that is where the interest of the students can be well aggregated and protected so, I will just rap my position up by saying that i am sure and i believe that 30th LASUSU is capable of giving out the best when it comes to leadership.
