Two Lagos State University students have been selected for the yearly MAMMAN Daria scholarship award, both from the School of Communication and concurrently belong to the Association of Campus Journalist (LASU Chapter).
The Mamman Daria scholarship is meant to support female students in journalism. It was instituted in 2017 to celebrate a man, who against the grain of his time educated his daughters; giving them an advantage that sets them apart from their peers.
Many have benefited from the scholarship since it's inception from various institutions and recently it was recorded that two of the Lagos State University students and also members of the aforementioned association have benefited in 2020 .
A sophomore student of LASU school of Communication, Oyeyebi Ziyadat expressed her gratitude to campus journalists as she explained the process that resulted to her winning the scholarship, she said" After the three days journalism training with ACJ-LASU,I noticed the scholarship on the groupchat which was sent by ileyemi Mariam urging us to go for this that she will provide anything we need for it".
She added that the criteria was quite clear and she decided to put in for it, she mentioned that she clinged to those who had won the award before and that was a guide for her.
Ziyadat further stated that essay was part of their requirements and the topic was " suitability for being the winner " this essay was to be due and submitted by December 6th,2019.
In her conversation, she acknowledge the assistance of Yossyinfo known by Ileyemi Mariam, (Deputy Editor) Okerinde Ayobami (Editor-in Chief) and Rabiu Afeez (Features Editor) who encouraged her during her write up for the essay.
Another beneficiary Taofeeq Fareedah explained the process that resulted to her win "About the write up, I basically wrote about my journey as writer from my Primary school days when I used to write short stories to secondary school when I joined press club and was given the position of a secretary and how these fuelled my choice of study during my utme registration
I had never written a scholarship essay at first I was confused and I didn't know how to go about it,: My hope was to win the scholarship to ease the financial burden on my parents and to the glory of God, I won.
A recent graduate of the school and the current deputy editor of ACJ-LASU was a beneficiary of the scholarship last year, Ileyemi Mariam.
