EFFECT OF CHANGE OF ENVIRONMENT ON MEDICAL STUDENTSBy Akinsanya Ayomide

The Lagos state university's college of medicine popularly known as LASUCOM is having a bitter sweet effect on students upon transiting from the school's main campus to the college of medicine at The general hospital ikeja.

Some say it's a sort of 'Heaven' compared to the main campus while others say it's a movement towards greater stress.  Based on a recent survey I'll be discussing the various challenges and improvement the school has brought on its students.

The transition from the Lagos State University OJO main campus to the college of medicine at Ikeja is a drastic change which has had various effects on students, financially, mentally even socially most of which were adverse effects. Some of the effects which are paramount are the high cost of living, absence of school accommodation, stress as a result of increased workload, lack of shuttles, conducive teaching environment and efficient lecturers.

The cost of living in ikeja while studying at the college of medicine is very high as the school is located in a high standard environment. Basic necessities such as food, clothings, basic household equipment, the cost of transportation, hairdressing and even snacks are more expensive compared to Ojo which was our former environment.

The cost of eating in the school cafeteria and the cost of buying co-operate wears (which is almost compulsory)  is very expensive compared to Ojo. This is a demerit as it costs more to get what we want.

Also, the fact that we were not given accommodation in the school is of major concern as it makes life in the school very hard. The cost of getting accommodation is very expensive and this puts a lot of stress on parents and guardians of students at the college of medicine, some people have to come from home daily.

Students have to rush over to ikeja as early as 4 AM from places in Ogun state, ikorodu, Ojo etc. While some that were able to get an accommodation in the school environment have to walk 20-30 minutes to get to school. This has  effects on the mental wellbeing of. students as most students get to school tired and hungry and most times unable to focus in class nor study when they get home late in the night.

The fact that the cost of living is high and the lack of proper accommodation puts a lot of stress and strain on both the parents and the students. This might end up affecting the students who are not able to manage the load of stress leading to an outright breakdown of the students which will in turn affect academic performance of such student.

Also the lack of shuttles within the school premises is another issue. The walking distance from our various homes to school and even the distance of the school gates to the lecture theatre can be very tiring unlike Ojo which has surplus of shuttle buses.

This is a demerit as students are always tired after the long walk and sometimes after the long stress of working, lectures are sometimes cancelled. This dampens the spirit of the students.Schooling at the College of medicine also has many advantage.

A major bonus of moving to the college of medicine is the conducive teaching environment, all the lecture theatres are properly ventilated and aerated with air conditioners . projectors and speakers are always used in classes to ensure the students adequately get what is been taught.

The practical classes are very realistic as required gadgets are readily provided . The lecturers are mostly very nice and approachable, professional and very patient in teaching. They take their time to make sure every student understands what they teach, this makes it very easier for students to learn and assimilate what they are being taught.

Although some department and their lecturers aren't very generous with their lecture materials, this makes further study at home difficult as the student is only able to study what he or she can put down in class.

These are some of the effects of the change in environment on students. To my opinion, most of the issue discussed can be solved if adequate accommodation is provided for the students.
