The Lagos state university's college of medicine famously known as the pride of LASU have again proved their slogan as the released transition list of students has angered quite a number of parents and disappointed lots of students as they (the students) could not crossover to the college of medicine to study the various medical courses that they were initially admitted for.
The issue of the transition list or transition quota has always been a source of various discord and confusion amongst parents and students as no one really knows what CGPA would be required from a student to crossover to study any of the five courses at the college of medicine and if this 'requirement' isn't met, the students have their courses changed to any random course in the university.
As random as moving a student from Nursing to a totally different faculty as Biology education, Engineering, Botany, HKSHE and many more.
In most cases it is usually about half the admitted number of students admitted to medicine that are actually taken to cross over and it is almost usually Same with the department of Physiology.
The 2018/2019 set were not really different. Departments like Nursing and Dentistry accepted based on an CGPA benchmark, while Physiology and Medicine accepted by quota I.e taking in a certain number of students according to their ranking by CGPA.
Even pharmacology a new course still admitted chosen students that attained a certain CGPA although there was a quite a number of them that transited. Parents think this is preposterous in every sense. They believe students should be allowed to continue with their initial courses irrespective of their CGPA in the first year.
Some Parents of students in Dentistry Nursing Physiology and Pharmacology protested that their children's initial choice of course was medicine before the university's admission board gave them different courses and still have to decline them from studying their 'admitted ' courses by giving them totally new courses to study.
Some parents made threats of suing the school for the 'unjust' acts they've carried out, pointing out that some parents of The university of Lagos did exactly that and won the case against the school. Students however are already adjusting into new courses they've been given.
These courses varying from Human kinetics and Health education (HKSHE) zoology, biochemistry, microbiology etc. Some can't complain at all because they had carryovers in their first year and it is generally known that no college of medicine student can have a carry over in his or her first year stay at LASU OJO campus,which some parents and students still think is unfair, as engineering students are still allowed to transit even with a carry-over or two, But why not medical students?.
About last week after their courses had already been changed their result portal changed again and they were shuffled into new courses. These students had to be moved again to new classes carrying the stigma that they were once medical students.
Some complained that once their courses were changed they had multiple carryovers in different courses that didn't offer last year but were required for their new courses.
This conundrum has really upset many to the point that some have decided to abandone their schooling for the mean time. These scenario plays out every year once the transition list for the college of medicine is out.
Many from other departments have blamed the issue of non transitioning on the students while others have blamed the schools management for over-admitting students in the first place. They've said if the school can't admit students it can take care of at the college of medicine, they shouldn't bother admitting them at all. Hopefully the school heeds this advice and stops being responsible for the heartbreak of many aspiring medical students.
