Students, Staff Denied Access to LASU Campus Over New Minimum Wage Row

Students and members of staff of the Lagos State University have been denied access into the the school enviroment for the furtherance of academic activities due to resistance of academic and non academic tertiary unions over the implementation of the payment of the new minimum wage

This comes after the school management announced that final year and postgraduate students were clear to resume today.

While members of the LASU community attempted to make their way into the campus early this morning, it was discovered that both entrances leading into the campus was locked, therefore constituting a pause in the proposed resumption.

The new developments are sequel to the demands for the discharge of the new #30,000 minimum wage to be effected by the Lagos State government for academic and non academic staff.

This was as a result of a joint decision by all academic and non academic unions in the state on September 8.

Speaking during the virtual meeting which had other Lagos tertiary academic unions leaders in attendance, the chairman of the Non Academic Staff Union, LASU (NASU-LASU), Mr Moruf Sanni reiterated that their decision after the meeting was "no minimum wage, no resumption until the government implements the new minimum wage".

While adding that students and staff would not be allowed into the school premises for the resumption fixed on September 14, he said,

"There is no sincerity from the government concerning the payment of minimum wage to all its staff in tertiary institutions in the state."

"We do not have any issue with the LASU management but we want government to pay our minimum wage".

Mr Saheed Oseni, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Union of Universities, LASU also disclosed that their next decision is subject to a meeting with their members. This meeting is scheduled for September 14.
