Africa Check has shortlisted Oluwaseye Ogunsanya, a 400-level student of Lagos State University, editor at the Association of Campus Journalist (ACJ-LASU) and fact checker at People's Check for the 2020 African Fact-Checking Awards.
Africa Check which is Africa’s first independent fact-checking organisation, made this announcement on their official website, noting that a record number of 192 entries from 27 countries across the continent, were received for the 2020 awards.
According to the organisation, the awards, which is now in its seventh year, is the only awards programme that honours journalism by Africa-based media in the expanding field of fact-checking.
The categories for this year include Fact-Check of the Year by a Working Journalist and Fact-Check of the Year by a Student Journalist.
The winner of the award for the best fact-checking report by a working journalist will get a prize of $3,000, while the runner-up will be awarded $1,500. For the student category, the winner will get a prize of $2,000, and the runner-up $1,000.
Oluwaseye Ogunsaya of People's Check is among the Nigerians shortlisted for the student category, with the report which debunked a viral video, claiming that Nigeria's Minister Of Education, Mallam Adamu announced that all schools can resume on September 7, 2020, after months of closure due to COVID-19.
He found out that the video was doctored a voice-over saying “…schools can now be reopened on the 7th of September, 2020” was overlaid on the short clip which was a news report posted on June 12, 2016, by NTA.
The minister in the news report was speaking at the commencement of capacity enhancement and sustainability workshop for African centres of excellence in Abuja.
