Sanwo-Olu Dissolves LASU Governing Council, Gives New Directives

Since the tenure of Former Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, Professor Olanrewaju .A. Fagboun ended, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu appointed a Governing Council to ensure a smooth transitioning of the previous administration to the new one, amongst other issues.

But according to the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, Governor Sanwo-Olu's Special Visitation to the university had written a report on the Governing Council and this report adopted by the Governor orders fresh processing for the V.C's appointment, election of a new Governing Council by the Acting V.C and School Management Staff, and ordering compulsory leave of the Registrar to the Governing Council.

According to the Lagos State University Law, Cap L69 Volume 7, Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (as amended), with the Governor's consideration of the Special Visitation Panel's report on the appointment of the 9th Vice Chancellor, the Governor's adopted directives are as follows:

Immediate dissolution of LASU Governing Council, removal of Pro VC and Governing Council Chairman for violating the extant laws guiding a V.C's appointment,

Cancellation of the 2nd failed process to appoint the 9th substantive Vice Chancellor as a result of extant laws violation, breach of due process, refusing to follow the rules guiding the 9th V.C Appointment, as stated publicly,

The constitution of a new Governing Council which will conduct a new process for the appointment of the 9th Vice Chancellor, in due time.

Exemption of all the members of the Joint council and State Committee included in the two failed processes in 2020 and 2021 appointment of 9th V.C, from participating in the new exercise.The Acting VC is directed to elect a new council from the Senate.

The Registrar and Secretary to Council is to continue working while on leave with immediate effect until the end of the new VC Appointment exercise as a result of failure to advise the Joint council and Senate Committee against wrong judgement against the Law during the previous failed exercises. The Acting Registrar is to oversee the new exercise. Also, the Acting VC is to send the names of all the Deputy Registrars of Lagos to the Governor through the Special Adviser of Education, in order to appoint the University Acting Registrar and

Finally, the Governor and Visitor using the reports of the Special Visitation Panel (SVP) shall set-up a full visitation panel for LASU with immediate effect.
