Friday, 1st of October, 2021 marks the increase in her age by one. 61years of independence indeed; what have we to offer? She increases in age but has she increased in standard as expected of a soon to be 61years old nation.
Even amidst the forthcoming independence celebration, we must not forget that we still have unfinished business - striving to meet the standard of a developed country. Although, we ought to spend time organizing parties, match pass presentations, a news release for the D-day and anticipating public address from the President. However, our present state as an independent country calls for sober minds, planning and taking drastic actions to support our beloved aged country.
Ageing should not just reflect in the number of years we have spent as an independent nation. But it should also mirror our achievements as a country. Rather than celebrating, we ought to evaluate our achievements, identify our shortcomings and take drastic steps to ameliorate our reputation as a federation.
Celebrating our 61st year of independence, though not bad, would be some worth meaningless in a bad economic cum. Every new day marks an increment in the price of goods and services and a reduction in the value of our currency. Don't you feel we deceive ourselves when we say we are the 'Giant Of Africa' with nothing to show? Nigeria is blessed, but we will not reap the blessing if we keep investing in the reality of a confused state.
Independence is not just freedom from external control alone. A country is qualified to boast of independence when it becomes responsible to itself and its immediate environment without depending too much on external support. No doubt, a nation cannot survive being isolated from other beneficial nations. However, it becomes a dilemma when the relationship between a nation and another make it permanently dependent.
No one nor group deserves to be blamed or declared responsible for our present ill-condition rather than pointing fingers, complaining or castigating. Let's wake up and become responsible to our nation in its forthcoming 61st year. Reviving our country is not the responsibility of the government alone. We all have a role to play.
