The lives of students and staff of Lagos State University, Ojo, may be at risk as a building close to wreck and ruins is still used as a lecture room and lecturers' office.
The building, which is situated at the institution's Faculty of Arts, commonly known as Philosophy Building, is wallowing in a state of shambles, lacking basic infrastructure including blackboard.
ACJ-LASU gathered that the classroom had neither a working ceiling fan nor a bulb either before, during or after lectures.
The classroom which is usually crowded with students, even while some would stand on their feet or sit on the desk to hear the lectures and take notes, remains a threat for asthmatic patients among the students.
Again, according to ACJ-LASU, a lecturer whose name is withheld, said he refused to take his class in the building because of its whacked state and for his own safety.
Meanwhile, other lecturers essentially, make use of the classroom for their lectures owing to the limited number of classrooms available in the faculty.
The investigation made by ACJ-LASU reveals that the Faculty has two large halls namely, Theatre Arts Auditorium and Central Language Laboratory and eleven classrooms which are currently available for the seven departments for academic activities.
Speaking with the President of the Faculty, Comrade Moses Adeoye, he noted that the management of the university are aware of the risky state of the building, adding that the management are working to rehabilitate it.
When asked if the management could stop lectures from being held in the classroom for safety's sake, Mr. Moses said the onus is on the school Management.
In his words: “It's not in our jurisdiction to do things like this. The school management, even if anything happens, are answerable to that. We've talked about this several times”.
“You see, some things are not in our capacity. The school are the one in charge. We've written, we've talked to them. We've done all we could. In fact, they've come down there, came to check there, snap and all of that. The Faculty Management, the Dean, the Sub-Dean, they've been there also. So if they choose to close down (the building), it is left over to them,” he added.
On the other hand, also commenting on the issue was the Speaker of the Faculty, RT Honourable Liadi Abdulazeez Opeyemi, who said that the ongoing constructed building which is hopeful to be completed soon is expected to replace the outdated Philosophy Building.
