Following the Student Judiciary Council (SJC)'s verdict on the case between Honourable Atiku Semiu and Rt. Hon Liadi Abdulazeez on March 2, 2022, the claimant's lead counsel, Mr Francis King has refused to accept the council's ruling.
The court proceedings and hearing which took place at the Lagos State University Law Building, as observed by ACJ-LASU correspondent saw the Chief Judge of SJC give his final verdict on the case.
According to ACJ-LASU's reporter, the Chief Judge, Daniel Akinyemi said that an apology must be issued to the 28th Speaker of the Faculty of Arts, Hon Liadi Abdulazeez (Defendant) within 48 hours by the Claimant, Hon. Atiku Semiu for the latter's gross misconduct.
Also, Judge Akinyemi ruled that a fine of the sum of 20,000 naira is to be paid to Hon. Semiu (the claimant) for the fortification of signature and abuse of power by Rt. Hon Liadi Abdulazeez (Defendant) with the claimant's reinstatement.
However, after the court hearing, ACJ-LASU's correspondent during an interview session with two lead counsels gathered that the lead counsel for Hon. Atiku Semiu (Claimant) was dissatisfied with the verdict while the lead counsel for Rt. Hon Liadi Abdulazeez (Defendant) was satisfied.
Responding to ACJ-LASU'S reporter, Lead Counsel for the Claimant, Francis King said, "The judges doesn't know the right thing, he settled the case like a father of 2 children. We aren't kids fighting over something. It should be what is this and this is it. My client brought up the charges, he isn't meant to tender an apology."
"SJC is a bullsh**. Few hours before the court judgement, we saw the court having a conversation with the defendant with a faculty letterhead, how do you expect us to trust such judgement?", he questioned.
Mr King stated that the 20,000 naira fine to be paid to his client is nothing compared to expenses already spent.
He said, "The court should know today is a day of recognition, SJC been dormant for a long time and we decided to bring it back to life and what the court could do is to delay the trials, one-sided decision. It is really annoying and disappointing.
Dissatisfied with the SJC ruling, he added, "I want to get an information from my client if he wants to further to the Court of Appeal and that is if we don't meet the same set of judges in the Appeal Court but we have to try."
On the otherhand, the lead counsel to the defendant, Mr Saheed Akpambla calmly said, "The court did their best in disclosing justice for the people. There are two legs in fair hearing, the court did an audio partem, a hearing from both sides. The court in his inherent jurisdiction made a decision."
Mr Akpambla stated to our correspondent that, "The verdict was made in both parties' favour. The claimant who was impeachee with a constitutional backing must be reinstated and a paid a fine of 20,000 Naira.
"The claimant's acts leads to a gross misconduct and so must send an apology letter to the speaker within 24 hours", he concluded.
