Word War IV: Faculty Of Education Shines, As 100 Level Student Emerges Word Lord

Victor Sunday, an 100 level student of the Faculty of Education has emerged the winner of 4th edition of the annual interfaculty school debate, Word War on the 24th of August, 2022 at the MBA Hall, Faculty of Sciences.

This 4th edition of the Word War event was tagged, "Politics and The Youths: The Propellants and the Drawbacks." 

The popular speaking competition, an initiative of the LASU Debate Society (LSUDS), the university's public speaking community comprises of 8 faculties, 3 schools, 2 colleges, and 26 representatives from Ojo, Ikeja and Epe campus.

Comprising of 4 stages, the debate competition was kicked of on August 3 and the combined finals of the Intra LSUDS debate, Oratory Contest, and the Word War IV, all held on August 24, 2022. 

Honouring the invitation to the event, were distinguished staffs of the university management namely; Head of Media Relations CIPPR, LASU,ojo), Mr Olaniyi S. Jeariogbe; the Principal Assistant Registrar Center for Environmental and Science Education, Mrs.

Olubunmi Arinola AGOSU-LEWIS, LASU Staff Adviser, Dr Ganiu Abisoye Bamgbose, Prof. Ayotunde Ayodele among many others guests.

Making up the 3-man panel were the Councillor Ward Be Ifelodun LGA, CLLR. Bolajoko Sulaimon; Coordinator for Centre for International Academic Achievements, Mr Adeyemi Yekini and Executive Director for Exam Room Outreach, Olufemi Aganga-Williams.

While the judges for the competition were 

Award Winning Speaker and LASU Lecturer, Mr Ademola lbraheem; Mr Oke Olayemi Israel, an International Public Apeaking Champion and Miss Abati Oluwatoyosi Dorcas, a Public speaking coach from ABC Speak Academy).

The climax of the competition was when Victor Sunday alongside his Supporting Speaker, Temitope Elizabeth, clinched the Word Lord title for the Faculty of Education.

Speaking to ACJ-LASU, the new Word Lord, Victor Sunday revealed that he had previously participated in national and international debate competitions, like World Schools Debating Championship 2019 (Thailand), Oldham Cup Debate Championship 2019 (Singapore), NAOWA Inter Command and NMS Debate 2018, World Scholars Cup in 2020, BYES National Debate Championship in 2014 and several other inter schools and intra schools debate events. 

Expressing himself in relation to his victory at the Word War IV, the 100 level CRS Student said, "I feel a sense of fulfillment because it is a record breaking feat for me, being the first male and first from my faculty, it is very fulfilling.My experience abroad made me realize now much of a local champion I w So, since then have been constantly developing myself in content and strategy to be a better debater."

Victor, encouraged others who were interested in achieving the same feat to be fearless as uniqueness is important when it comes to public speaking.

He said, "The beauty of Public speaking is our uniqueness. We all don't have to be the same or copy a particular style. Style differs but different styles could be effective. It is all about listening to diversity speak. Therefore, everyone has a stage and there is a place for everyone in oratory; no one person is a standard. It is a room open for all to express themselves in their own way. You need not to fear because the stage is set to listen to another diversity that you are."
