The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (LADSVA), in conjunction with the LASU Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence has, on Monday began a 2-day sensitisation programme on Domestic and Sexual Violence.
The event, scheduled to hold on the 12th and 13th of December, 2022, took place at the 3-in-1 Education Lecture Hall, Ojo Campus.
Featuring the Representative of Director of the Center, Dr Mrs Macauley Adeyelure and 2 other Associate Directors, Dr Mrs Savage Oluremi and Dr Samad Lawal, the event was divided into 3 sessions, each handled by different speakers.
For the 1st session, Mrs Eniola Edun gave an overview of sexual and gender-based violence, its forms, various aspects of sexual abuse as well as myths attached to rape.
Mr. Damilare Adewusi, taking the 2nd session spoke on the legal aspects of sexual and gender-based violence. He explained the existing state laws and policies available for victims and offenders stating that there were criminal legal frameworks established to protect survivors.
He said, "Domestic violence laws protects everyone regardless of gender or sex, and it differs in each state. Defilement of the child, rape without consent, Rape with penetration results in life imprisonment. Sexual assault and harassment is 3yrs imprisonment. Sexual assault results in a year in prison."
Speaking on Psychological First Aid (PFA), and its importance, Mr Tobi manned the 3rd session. According to him, "Emotional discomfort is not usually as evident as physical harm, yet it is equally painful and incapacitating. It is natural to be emotionally affected after a life-changing encounter."
"Hence, PFA is needed by giving a loving, reassuring presence and instruction on common stress reactions, Psychological First Aid satisfies fundamental needs and lowers psychological suffering."
Closing the event for the day, Secretary of LASU Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual/Gender-based Violence, Mrs Akinyemi gave the closing remarks.
Notably, the program had, in attendance Presidents and Vice Presidents from different faculties and departments only.
