Professor Lai Oso, a lecturer of Lagos State University from Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FCMS), has charged media practitioners to engage in effective investigative reporting.
Prof. Lai Oso made the clarion call while speaking as a keynote speaker at a media conference tagged, “Amplify In-depth Media Conference’’, held at NECA House, Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday.
In the course of unravelling strategic elements of investigative journalism, Prof. Lai Oso stressed that holding public figures to account in public interest is a core of media outlets.
Describing investigative journalism as an epitome of journalism, Prof Lai Oso itemised the impacts, power, values and weaknesses of investigative news reports, Nigeria in particular.
According to him, ethnic and religious division in the country, ownership and control of media houses, low resources capacity and depreciating moral values of the citizenry constitute the major challenges of investigative journalism in Nigeria.
Among the attendees of the media event, were investigative reporters from various Nigerian media houses, as well as students including members of the Association of Campus Journalists of Lagos State University (ACJ-LASU).
Notably, key personalities at the media conference were the founder of Tiger Eye Foundation, Anas Anas; Managing Editor of Premium Time, Idris Akinbajo; Executive Director of International Press Conference, Lanre Arogundade; Executive Director of Enough is Enough Nigeria, Yemi Adamolekun; Executive Director of Wole Soyinka Centre of Investigative Journalism, Moturayo Alaka, among others.
