On Friday, May 26, 2023, the Lagos State University (LASU) held a comprehensive orientation program for the 2022 Modular Year of its Sandwich Degree Programme. The event which took place at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo campus, Lagos was organised to acquaint and acclimate the recently enrolled students with the university's cultural values, rules, and guidelines.
In his welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty of Education emphasized the institution's unwavering dedication to providing exceptional education for all its students. He reaffirmed the university's commitment, stating, "Our priority is to ensure that our students receive a quality education. and we have put in place highly qualified academic staff and well-equipped non-academic staff to support this endeavor. We are dedicated to helping students develop into responsible, educated, and well-rounded individuals."
As the event progressed, Prof. Adejuwon A. Adeneye, the Director of the Sandwich Program, explained that there was no difference between the certificates awarded to Sandwich degree students and regular students. He emphasized the quality of education received by Sandwich students, highlighting the accomplishments of 10 Sandwich students who are poised to graduate with First Class honors by June.
Addressing the issue of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), Associate Prof. Igot Ofem, the Director of the SGBV Division, stressed the university's zero-tolerance policy toward all forms of violence. She stated, "At LASU, we are changing the narrative and creating a safe space for students and staff. We have established a center for response and prevention of SGBV, which serves as a one-stop center for reporting incidents. Our guiding principle at the center is confidentiality and justice."
Expanding on the university's rules and regulations, Prof. Tajudeen Olumoko, the Dean of Students Affairs, urged students to familiarize themselves with the university's rules and regulations, easily accessible on its website. Prof. Olumoko cautioned against attending parties outside the university premises, drawing attention to the inherent risks of sexual assault.
Prof. Olumoko underscored that indecent dressing, cultism, and alcohol consumption within the university are strictly prohibited. He added that the penalties for engaging in any form of unacceptable behavior include a two-semester suspension for full-time students and a one-year suspension for Sandwich students.
The Director of Information and Communication Technology, Prof. Enikuomehin Oluwatoyin, represented by Dr. Ridwan Mustapha, the Assistant Director of DICT, shared information regarding the directorate's online services.
In an effort to foster self-reliance, he advised students to refrain from visiting external business centers and instead encouraged them to acquire the necessary skills to independently perform tasks. In the case of difficulties, he advised the students to report to the center's support email.
He concluded by informing the students that their first-year courses might involve computer-based testing (CBT), and hands-on training will be provided to prepare them
Dr. Segun Olawumi, the Director of Sports and Recreation, passionately emphasized the significance of sports for physical well-being, aligning with the sixth strategic goal set by the university management. He highlighted a diverse range of activities available for student participation.
Additionally, Dr. Olawumi revealed an exciting collaboration between LASU and UNILAG, as they co-host an upcoming event in June 2024. While noting a reward prize of ₦100,000 for this event, he encouraged students to actively engage and take part in the occasion, fostering camaraderie and promoting healthy competition within the university community.
Mr. Edu Babatunde, representing the Chief Security Officer of Lagos State University (LASU), reiterated the institution's unwavering dedication to ensuring the utmost security for all individuals on campus.
He sternly cautioned against parking vehicles on walkways or roads within the university premises, as such vehicles would face deflation and a ₦5000 fine. Mr. Babatunde also served as a reminder that unregistered vehicles, vehicles with dealer numbers, and tinted vehicles are strictly prohibited within the university grounds.
In the event of any security breaches, attendees were strongly urged to report them promptly to the Security Intelligence/Investigation & Enforcement Unit (SIU) for swift action.
The orientation program witnessed the attendance of distinguished individuals, including members of the university management, representatives from the Lagos State University Centre for Information and Public Relations, and the Lagos State University Multimedia Unit.
