In a remarkable initiative aimed at promoting inclusivity and accessibility in the media industry, TheCable officially launched Nigeria's first disability-friendly news application on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.
As pioneers in the Nigerian industry, TheCable has taken a significant leap towards creating an inclusive system by developing a mobile application that ensures equal access to information for individuals with disabilities.
Named "Dina," this disability-inclusive news app incorporates assistive features to cater to the diverse needs of people with visual impairment, auditory challenges, certain limb impairments and more. While its primary purpose is to provide information, Dina is designed to serve both disabled and able-bodied individuals.
The launch of the Dina app, held at Amber Residence in GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, was made possible through the support of esteemed partners such as the Google News Initiative, Project Enable Africa, and Stanford Edgeproject. The event witnessed the participation of journalists, persons living with disabilities, and other key stakeholders.
Furthermore, during the app unveiling, the gathering actively engaged individuals, including people living with disabilities, to provide valuable suggestions and recommendations. This collaborative effort aimed to enhance the app's features and further advance the cause of inclusivity.
This significant milestone achieved by TheCable newspaper marks yet another monumental stride in the Nigerian news industry, as the Dina app eliminates the barriers that previously hindered equal access to information for people with disabilities.
Simon Kolawole, founder and CEO of TheCable, aptly captures the significance of this development, stating, "The realities of people living with disabilities used to be a distant issue for some of us, and we live in a society where if you’re not part of the majority, nobody cares about you."
With the launch of the Dina app, The Cable demonstrates its unwavering commitment to addressing the needs of all individuals and fostering a more inclusive and caring society.
