The Lagos State University Students' Union Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) has revealed campaign regulations ahead of the 34th Lagos State University Students' Union (LASUSU) elections.
The IEC, operating under the name "THE PELLUCID," made these regulations public via their Instagram account in the early hours of Tuesday, October 10.
Amongst them is the stipulation that campaign materials must adhere to both the institution's rules and the LASUSU Electoral Act. Additionally, these regulations strictly forbid any campaign materials from disparaging or defaming rival candidates.
Also, candidates are limited to displaying a maximum of two banners and three posters per faculty, whether old or new. Violation of this rule or any campaign regulation results in a 5,000 NGN fine, with excess materials to be removed within 24 hours.
Furthermore, campaign materials, including posters and banners, must be placed in designated areas within faculties, with the added requirement that they bear the signature of the returning officer of the IEC.
The regulations also explicitly prohibit the placement of campaign-related materials anywhere on the students' arcade. Additionally, candidates are strictly barred from damaging or removing campaign posters belonging to their opponents.
Finally, the regulations dictate that all campaign materials must be removed a full forty-eight (48) hours prior to the commencement of the elections.
The information further emphasizes the necessity for all electorates and aspirants to comply meticulously with these regulations, in addition to any other guidelines that the IEC may later introduce. The statement also warns that any candidate found to be in violation of these rules risks forfeiting their candidature.
