The upcoming 7th edition of the National Parliamentary Summit (NPS) has been officially scheduled to take place on October 24th and 25th, 2023.
This announcement was made during a press conference held on October 17, 2023, at the Conference Hall of the Student Arcade, Lagos State University, Ojo Campus.
Rt. Sanusi Modiu, the convener of the event and Speaker of the Student Parliamentary Council, urged all Lagos State University students to actively participate in the summit, emphasizing that the NPS is open to all, dispelling the common misconception that it is exclusively for student parliamentarians.
The speaker also stated that the summit's primary focus is to promote government involvement, addressing the issue of quality representation, with the aim of bridging the gap between the representatives and the represented.
Hon. Giwa Rukayyah, the chairperson of the event and Clerk of the Lagos State University Students Parliamentary Council (SPC), outlined the objectives of this year's NPS. She explained, "Our primary goal for the National Parliamentary Council is to gather and educate young minds about politics and legislation. Over six years, NPS has effectively addressed contemporary 21st-century issues, providing a foundation for meaningful dialogue and growth."
During the press conference, it was revealed that NPS will extend over two days and will feature a career summit, Inter-Parliamentary Debate competition, and a colloquium with the theme "Panoramic Assessment of the Nigerian Legislative Space".
The NPS parliamentary debate, now in its second edition, will feature LASU student parliamentarians from various faculties. It will commence with an essay competition, shortlisting seven faculties for the physical debate on October 24, with five faculties proceeding to the finals on October 25.
The National Parliamentary Summit will welcome distinguished personalities, including the Assistant Director of the Ministry of Youth, Mrs. Umar Omosola, one-time Lagos Youth Ambassador, Olafore Comfort, and legislative members of Ikeja Local Government, Hon. Adenuga Ayotunde, among others. Notable past student leaders of the university will also be recognized and awarded at the event.
The National Parliamentary Summit, an annual event organized by the parliamentary arm of the Lagos State University Student Union (LASUSU SPC), which began six years ago, strives to encourage youth involvement in politics and contribute to stable and sustainable governance. Just like previous editions the summit continues to promote youth engagement in the country's political landscape and offers potential solutions to the challenges facing Nigeria.
