The Senate at Lagos State University (LASU) has officially banned all final year sign-out parties and funfairs following their 306th statutory meeting held on Thursday, January 25th, 2024.
According to the report presented by the Acting Dean of Students Affairs, the Senate expressed concerns over the disregard for rules and improper conduct observed during recent signing-out festivities. Issues noted included students inviting non-university guests, open consumption of alcohol and smoking on campus, indecent dressing, loud music, traffic congestion from improper parking, and littering across university grounds.
The Senate condemned these actions as unacceptable and agreed to strict new rules for any final year sign-out events moving forward. As per the new regulations, final year students must sign an undertaking agreeing not to organize parties or funfairs. If signing-out occasions do occur, music, outside food and drinks, canopies, and visitors will be prohibited.
Violators of these new rules will face severe penalties, including automatic rustication (suspension) for one academic year and cancellation of all final year exams and grades. Offending students would have to re-pay tuition, re-register courses, and retake the entire final year.
The Senate decisions aim to uphold discipline and decorum on campus during important examination periods and accreditation visits. University authorities hope the ban will promote order and compliance with conduct policies among graduating students celebrating their sign-out.
