ACJLASU Chapter Inducts New Members at First Career Summit

The Association of Campus Journalists, Lagos State University Chapter (ACJ-LASU), inducted new members into its fold during a career summit held on July 26, 2024, at the Faculty of Law Moot Court, Ojo Campus, Lagos. The event, themed "Positioning Campus Journalists for 21st-Century Media," featured experienced speakers from the media industry who shared their knowledge and expertise with attendees.

During the panel session, Miss Abdulsemlu Monsuroh, an alumnus and journalist at Cable News, emphasized the importance of developing a personal writing style and tone. She also stressed the need for campus journalists to acquire skills in digital journalism, including audio, photo, and video editing.

Mr. Adejumo Kabir, Head of Southern Operations at Humangle, who represented the Keynote Speaker, Mr. Lekan Otufodurin advised aspiring freelancers to hone their writing and reporting skills, making their articles relatable to a general audience. He encouraged attendees to volunteer to write stories, pitch ideas to media outlets, and persevere despite rejections.

As a panelist, Mr. Kabir urged Campus reporters to pounce on every opportunity as the university is the nurturing ground for them. He encouraged the young reporters to not fear in their duty to hold the people in power accountable

Mrs. Itunuoluwa Hunga, representing Mrs. Abosede Georgeogan, the founder of Women in Leadership Advancement Network, urged attendees to freelance, intern, and be passionate, dedicated, and eloquent. She highlighted the importance of being a voracious reader and having a broad knowledge base to become a skilled broadcaster. Her keynote message was "Cook before you launch yourself."

Mr. Bayo Wahab, News Editor at Pulse Nigeria, emphasized leveraging social media to launch a career in campus journalism. He also stressed the importance of building a portfolio, including a blog and a collection of stories and projects.

Dr. Tunde Akanni, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, LASU encouraged students to start now, as the University period is the best time to build one's self.

Following the panel session, the new members were formally welcomed into the organization, receiving certificates and taking an oath of service to journalism. The summit concluded with a closing remark from the Editor-in-Chief of ACJ-LASU Chapter, Daniel Nworie. The summit became the first of its kind since the inception of ACJLASU.
